If you haven't been aware, a new drama series has been closely gaining a following on Netflix. All 10 episodes of Northern Rescue came out on the streaming platform last Friday, March 1, and it's already generating some buzz on social media.
Now, viewers who finished binge-watching the show are now looking for a follow-up. Is there going to be a Northern Rescue season 2? Will CBC Gem renew the show and have Netflix pick up the second season too.
Northern Rescue season 1 ended with a major cliffhanger that it doesn't seem right if there won't be a resolution. But for those just finding out about the show now, here's a short rundown of what this is all about.
Northern Rescue is a family drama starring William Baldwin (John West) Kathleen Robinson (Charlie Anders), Amalia Willamson (Maddie West), Spencer Macpherson (Scout West) and Taylor Thorne (Taylor West). It's about a Boston family who uproots their lives to Turtle Island Bay, where their Aunt Charlie stays because the kids need a mother figure.
The West children just lost their mother and now, as things go, they are trying to adjust to their new life, and their dad to his new job as a search and rescue boss. As they are each still in mourning, however, this change is very hard for the family. There's a lot of conflict, tears and tension that the show could rival This Is Us.
But the biggest drama of it all was revealed at the end of Northern Rescue season 1 episode 10. Maddie found out a big and life-changing secret and decided to bolt town.
Northern Rescue is actually a Canadian series so when season 1 came out on Netflix, it was also simultaneously released on CBC Gem. Both Netflix and CBC Gem have not made any announcements regarding the show's status since it's still rather early to tell if the show has received enough viewership.
However, according to What's on Netflix, should Northern Rescue receive a renewal, it will likely be back on the streaming platform around early 2020. But everything still hinges on the Canadian production and if CBC doesn't think it's worth another season then there will be no Northern Rescue season 2 on Netflix.
Meanwhile, series creator David Cormican told Variety that Northern Rescue fits so well into the programming of Netflix. "They've had an uptick with other family drama shows that lead to this push," the writer and executive producer said.
