It has been already revealed recently that Wonder Woman 1984 is not actually a sequel to the franchise. But while most of the cast will return to reprise their roles which basically proves that the film will happen within the same universe, this upcoming Wonder Woman film is not entirely a continuation to the previous plot.
Apparently, this new Wonder Woman film will feature the events that happened many decades after the first one. Hence, the title, 1984. But even if the setting is in parallelism with the first movie in the franchise, Wonder Woman 1984 will not be a traditional sequel, Charles Roven, the executive producer of the film, revealed with Vulture.
And this is just a confirmation to the director and writer, Patty Jenkins' statements in her previous interviews. According to her, this upcoming Wonder Woman film will feature a whole new different storyline. This is why fans and viewers would see Steve Trevor, once more, in Wonder Woman 1984.
As anyone would recall it, Chris Pine's character died in the first movie saving Diana and, well, the whole world from further catastrophe. But in light of the recent teasers and trailers, fans of the franchise saw Steve Trevor in one of these materials. And the first instinct of the fans is to theorize that Steve did not die at all which is quite impossible considering the fact that he really died in the first film.
So, it only makes sense that Wonder Woman 1984 is really a standalone movie that happens to feature the same characters from the same universe.
Aside from Diana and Steve, other new characters are also seen in the teasers and trailers released by the production. These celebrities include Kristen Wiig and Pedro Pascal.
Kristen Wiig is already revealed to play Cheetah's role in the film. And apparently, she is the main antagonist in the plot. As for Pedro Pascal, little has been said about his character. Although there are already theories that he will play the role of Maxwell Lord who is suggested to be responsible for Steve's comeback, there are no confirmations yet.
On another note, Pedro Pascal's role is believed to be another villain in the plot in reference to Express claims. In fact, some of the fans think that his role is somewhat a "god" in the plot. But it does not necessarily mean that he is one.
All in all, there are still a lot of questions about Wonder Woman 1984. But sadly, the only thing that the fans and viewers could do is to wait until it drops to the theaters.
