Marcella has been a hit since it came out and ITV previously confirmed the show was renewed for the third season. There are no further details about the upcoming installment, but here are some of the things to expect when Marcella season 3 returns.
The British detective series was written by Hans Rosenfeldt, and many are looking forward to seeing Anna Friel playing the character of Marcella Backland. The actress won an international Emmy for portraying the title character in the drama series. The third installment was confirmed on October 3, 2018, but the release date hasn't yet announced.
The first season of the show premiered in April 2016, while the second one air in February 2018. The series isn't following a particular month, but many speculated it might be released around April or May this 2019. When the show comes out, it will be both available on ITV and Netflix globally. The upcoming season will reportedly consist a total of 8 episodes.
As for the cast of Marcella season 3, the season 2 finale introduced a potential new character Hugo Speer as Frank Young. Other cast members expected to return in the upcoming installment include Nicholas Pinnock as Jason Backland, Jack Doolan as Detective Constable Mark Travis, Ray Panthaki as Rav Singha, and Nina Sosanya as Laura Porter.
The series producers promised that the upcoming season would further explore the psychology of Marcella, a troubled detective dealing with her mental health issues, as well as her job and family. Rosenfeldt also revealed in an interview with Radio Times that the things happened in season 2 finale were all set up for the next season.
So, in season 3, viewers will see Marcella going undercover following a DNA mix-up that led to her being pronounced dead. She was asked to work undercover since she doesn't exist anymore. Fans will also see a different version of her, and her memories from the past will haunt her.
Meanwhile, Friel revealed in an interview last year that the dark themes of season 2 left her battling with "anxiety" and "exhaustion." The actress said she had to let her body and mind go to where Marcella is because it wouldn't come across on screen if she didn't. She added that her body and mind weren't aware that the brain is just tricking doing such actions, and at the end of the day, it leads to exhaustion and anxiety.
