Line of Duty season 5 is set to begin its run on BBC this coming March 31. However, series creator Jed Mercurio has dropped the bomb on the viewers by saying that this could the show's penultimate run or the second to last offering until the series finale.

Mercurio said in an interview with Metro that he's not sure if Line of Duty will still have a life after the sixth season. When filming for Line of Duty season 5 wrapped, BBC confirmed the show's renewal for season 6.

"I think a lot depends on how people respond to it," Mercurio said. "I think we recognize that it has got a lifespan. We have to calibrate that against what the audience response is."

But if the teaser for Line of Duty season 5 were any indication, the police drama may likely succeed with stirring the audience's interest once again. Star Martin Compston (as Detective Sergeant Steve Arnott) even said that the upcoming installment will bring more explosive revelations.

Comptson also revealed in an interview with Digital Spy that he was on the edge the whole time he worked on the latest installment of Line of Duty. He hinted that any one of them, including the main stars, could be in for a tragic ending. Is the actor is suggesting that someone important to the show die in the fifth season?

Aside from Compston, returning for Line of Duty season 5 are Vicky McClure (as Detective Sergeant Kate Flenning) and Adrian Dunbar (as Superintendent Ted Hastings). Supporting cast Tony Pitts (as Lester Hargreaves), Maya Sondhi (as Maneet Bindra), Andrea Irvine (as Roisin Hastings), Polly Walker (as Gill Biggeloe) and Aiysha Hart (as DS Sam Railston) are also going to be in this latest offering.

Line of Duty season 5 is going to be a game changer because it will go off the formula for the very first. This season, the story will shift from its focus, as Mercurio said in a panel interview with several journalists.

If the last four seasons were about one corrupt police officer, this new installment will zero in on an organized crime group known as the Balaclava Men. Mercurio said that Line of Duty has mentioned the Balaclava Men on and off in the past. This time, the show will unmask who they are, thus viewers will finally find out what's really going on with this group.

Line of Duty season 5 will premiere on Sunday, March 31, at 9:00 p.m. on BBC.  The show will also stream of BBC's iPlayer, Netflix, Amazon and iTunes.
