A.P. Moller-Maersk Chief Executive Soren Skou warns of other problems between major economies. The world largest container shipping company sees other problems aside from the conflict between the United States and China.
The company enumerated that the import and export activity that includes the United States current negotiations with the European Union is one of the risks that traders need to overcome. The company also said that the possibility of changes in the relationship between China and Europe.
The chief executive said during an interview with Eunice Yoon of the CNBC at the China Development Forum in Beijing that it's pretty clear that the U.S. administration and EU have an outstanding discussion. He also said that while the U.S. and China are negotiating, he is sure that there'll be a revival of discussions about car tariffs and what-not between the U.S. and Europe. He also added that Europe wants to reshape the relationship with China, so there's plenty of high-level politics going on.
Recently, United States President Donald Trump said last year that he will impose tariffs of up to 25 percent on European cars and auto parts. He, however, promised the European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker that he will hold off on the tariffs for the time being.
Europe's stance on China's globalization is divided. Some European leaders are critical with the bloc's relationship with the Asian nation. Recently, French president Emmanuel Macron said that Europe needs to ts "naivety" in dealing with Beijing. The Chinese president Xi Jinping visited European countries including Italy and France Starting on Sunday.
The Chinese president first visited Monaco where he and his wife Peng Liyuan was welcomed by Prince Albert and Princess Charlene. Monaco's government said that they are interested in increased trade and economic cooperation with China and to boost China's image in the continent. The Chinese president joined French president Emmanuel Macron on a dinner which was followed by an official bilateral meeting between the two leaders. During the meeting, the two leaders discussed trade and economic issues. Macron is known to forge a united European front to contend China's advances. The French leader said on his tweet that they are very happy to welcome President Xi Jinping and his wife to France. He also said that President Xi Jinping's visit will strengthen our strategic partnership and affirm the role of France, Europe, and China towards a strong multilateralism. The leaders visit in Europe aims to gain support for the country's Belt and Road initiative.
