The Durrells season 4 is finally ready to return on ITV. Set to premiere this Sunday, April 7, at 8:00 p.m., star Keeley Hawes hints of a sad ending for the period family drama.

Speaking with Mirror, Hawes said that she had a hard time reading the final script of The Durrells season 4. The series, which is based on real life and real people, will expectedly close 1939 and it was historically the time the Nazi forces invaded Albania.

Hawes also told What's On TV that there's a part in the script in The Durrells season 4 where the family could spot the Nazi forces invading their neighboring island from their house. This war is something that the family cannot escape despite the life they built on the Greek Island of Corfu.

"[It was] heartbreaking, and it has to be," the actress said. "At the same time, it's nice to finish off the story. We're talking about real people, so it's nice to finish their story off properly."

The Durrells season 4 will wrap up the family's drama with eight episodes to air. There will be enough time to expound on every character's story conclusion, including the love affair between Louisa (played by Hawes) and Spiro (played by Alexis Georgoulis).

But before all of that unfolds, The Durrells season 4 will have to deal with big changes. Louisa has to be prepared as her sons, now slightly grown older, have been called on to fight in the war. After having lived through World War I, however, Louisa has her fears, and with the invasion so close to Corfu, she has to make decisions for the good of her family.

Amid the looming threat, Louisa also has to deal with her issues. Spiro has decided he will be staying with his wife in The Durrells season 3. Thus, Louisa has to learn to get over Spiro by keeping herself busy.

Louisa will turn part of her house in Corfu as a lodging home, which will allow The Durrells season 4 to introduce more interesting characters. Larry Durrell (played by Josh O'Connor) will pursue new romances, while Leslie Durrell (played by Callum Woodhouse) will focus on his shooting skills to also get over a broken heart.

Gerry Durrell (played by Milo Parker) will join a protest to save the animals on the island. It will land him in conflict with his older brother who loves his shooting practices. Margo (played by Daisy Waterstone), on the other hand, will open her hair salon next to the house and set a new life with Theo (played by Yorgos Karamihos).

Hawes said that despite their fate, The Durrells season 4 will have a satisfying ending for the fans. Catch the first episode on ITV this Sunday, April 7.
