EA is introducing microtransactions in "Battlefield V," using a new in-game currency that can be purchased using real-life money.

The in-game currency aptly called "Battlefield Currency," aims to give players more enjoyment in playing Battlefield V. It will be introduced along with a slew of new features and will be dropped today, April 4, along with "Chapter 3: Trial By Fire."

Polygon notes that EA has been very careful to announce that the new in-game currency will in no way affect gameplay by giving some players added advantages. For starters, EA said Battlefield Currency can only be used to buy items that can already be acquired through gameplay.

Customization Spree

With the addition of Battlefield Currency, Battlefield players will now have the option to purchase cosmetic customization items in two ways.

First, players can earn Company Coin, used for in-game transactions, through gameplay. The more time a player spends playing the game, the more Company Coin he can earn. Second, players can use their real-life money to purchase Battlefield Currency, which can be used in lieu of Company Coin.

Both in-game currencies can be used to purchase cosmetic items, including Common, Uncommon, Rare, and the new Epic items that will be introduced today. Simply put, Battlefield Currency allows time-strapped players to customize their company even though they don't have time to earn Company Coin.

Time-savers

Battlefield Currency will also allow players to purchase Tier Catch-Ups and XP Boosts.

Previously, players need to spend a lot of time playing in order to acquire so-called Chapter Reward items. Tier Catch-Ups allow Battlefield Currency users to acquire these items without having to spend a lot of time.

XP Boosts, on the other hand, simply do what they are called to do: give Battlefield Currency users a boost in the number of experience points they earn while playing, allowing them to reach Chapter, Career, Weapon, Vehicle, or Class Rank faster than before.

Elite Sets

Along with Battlefield Currency and Epic customization sets come the Elite sets. These new sets, which can be purchased using Battlefield Currency, allow players to play as an Elite soldier in multiplayer modes, including Firestorm.

These elite soldiers have unique names and backgrounds. They are accompanied by a slew of cosmetic items and feature distinct character voice-overs. They also have a Best Squad animation, and an exclusive Special Assignment that, when completed, unlocks a signature melee weapon.

As for gameplay, nothing is elite about them. EA promises that these Elites play like any other soldier, and will not give players any kind of gameplay advantage.
