Black Mirror season 5 is still in the middle of production. Netflix and show creator Charlie Brooker have not yet made any official announcements about the show's return date nor released any teaser for the new season.
The last special installment of Black Mirror, which was the interactive episode titled "Bandersnatch," released a teaser just days before it was set to premiere. It's likely that Netflix will follow the same process in releasing Black Mirror season 5.
The show usually works as a fall or winter season release because fans are likely to binge-watch Black Mirror during the holidays. Hence, season 5 might drop sometime in the last quarter of this year.
However, Brooker told Radio Times last March that Black Mirror season 5 episode 1 was completed even before the release of "Bandersnatch" last Dec. 28, 2018. He didn't reveal a release date but instead said that the next installment was "imminent-ish" and it "will be out soon." Thus, some fans believe that the new episodes might drop this summer.
Meanwhile, confirmed to be featured on Black Mirror season 5 are Avengers actor Anthony Mackie and Aquaman actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, as per Deadline. Miley Cyrus also let it slip via Entertainment Weekly that she filmed her episode last December, but her casting was not announced.
Brooker stated that the fifth season would continue in the tradition of Black Mirror's bleak and skeptic tone. However, there will be several lighter and more positive episodes as well.
There were speculations that Black Mirror season 5 will have a Brexit episode, but Brooker nixed the idea since this is still happening in the present and it's not their style to follow stories that are current.
"[We] don't know how [Brexit] is going to play out," Brooker said. "We don't want to be completely outmoded. We don't tend to do things where we go, 'Oh what's happening today?' and then write about that."
Fans of the show shouldn't also expect another interactive episode like "Bandersnatch" or a return to a season 3 fan favorite and most popular episode titled "San Junipero." Brooker admitted that the interactive format was a tricky thing to do and he doesn't see a need to revisit the characters on the show's top episode.
Black Mirror season 1 to 4 are currently streaming on Netflix. The show was originally aired in the U.K.'s Channel 4 before the streaming platform bought the series to be its exclusive original show.
