It's been almost a decade since Shrek franchise was released and it took about six years before fans heard about the fifth installment. But before that, many speculated the franchise has already ended, but that seems unlikely as Shrek 5 is said to be a game changer.
In 2016, NBC Universal Chief Steve Burke announced they'll bring a new life to the franchise as the company has acquired DreamWorks Animations. So now, there were a lot of expectations to Shrek 5, and many are wondering how it would be different from the previous installments.
Burke revealed Chris Meledandri - who produced blockbuster animated movies like Despicable Me and Minions - would take charge to all of the animated movies. He said the creativity of Meledandri could resurrect Shrek, as well as other DreamWorks franchises, and their goal is to maximize their revenue by making popular characters.
As of the moment, it's not yet sure when will Shrek 5 be released. But, the movie would likely be released this 2019. The past four Shrek movies were released in 2001, 2004, 2007, and 2010, the gap from the fifth movie is quite long, so fans' expectation about the film is high. Right now, fans need to wait for the official announcement to be made.
But, it's worth mentioning Shrek 5 has an IMDB page and it noted the movie would be released in 2019, and it's going to be a reboot of the Shrek series. Otakukart also reported the teaser of the film might be released by Summer 2019. Thus, it is possible it would hit the big screen later this year.
Moving on with the cast of Shrek 5, Eddie Murphy will reportedly be making a come back as Donkey. Other characters expected to return also include Cameron Diaz and Mike Myers, though there's no confirmation about other cast members. However, many believe NBC would try to revive the franchises, so it's possible there will be some changes in the casting.
As for the plot of Shrek 5, there were no further details on what would the story be. But, it was previously reported the story of the fifth installment could include information as to why Shrek ended up living in his swamp, or it could also reveal his true origin. Also, there's a petition that's aiming to make the lead male character a gay.
