Right now, all the attention is on Manny Pacquiao and who his next opponent will be. Of course, the choice has been whittled down to just two in Keith Thurman and Danny Garcia. Errol Spence Jr. would have made sense but the eight-time division champion seems to have taken him out of his list.
With Pacquiao hounding the spotlight, it comes to no surprise that Floyd Mayweather Jr. is now trying to gain a piece of it. And according to the Mirror, the retired American boxer is set to make a huge announcement and most are speculating that it could have something to do with never-ending talks of a rematch with the Filipino boxing icon.
Mayweather is set to make the announcement on Wednesday although he did not delve into specifics. Boxing fans anticipate a Mayweather vs. Pacquiao 2, perhaps the only boxing match that makes sense for the Flamboyant One. But as early as now, folks are enticed not to get their hopes up since it may not even be that alleged announcement.
The last time Mayweather took the ring was against Tenshin Nasukawa last New Year’s Eve. The American pug manhandled the Japanese kickboxer right in the first round, knocking him three times. It is possible that he could be contemplating facing another mixed martial artist, something that has proven lucrative to Mayweather.
As for Pacquiao, there is no indication yet on who between Thurman and Garcia has the inside track. The former is undefeated with one no-contest, making him the opponent that makes sense. Garcia can, however, sway things to his side if he is able to hack out an impressive win over Adrian Granados on Apr. 20 at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, the LA Times said.
At this point, anything is still possible. Spence may not be among the fighters that Pacquiao recently put up on social media but that does not mean the 29-year-old boxer is out of the running. That is if Spence is available.
If not a July fight with Pacquiao, a card that makes sense for Spence is a clash with Terrence Crawford. Boxing News 24 said that the fact that both hail from old school boxing and prefer to let their knuckles do the talking makes it a dream fight to watch.
With boxing fans taking exception to stick-and-move or dancing in the ring antics from several boxers, seeing two fighters slugging it out using tactical and power-packed punches is something to savor. But the next question is how much revenue will a Crawford vs. Spence generate?
Like it or not, there is always the business side of boxing – something that Mayweather has been able to take advantage of.
