There are a lot of expectations surrounding the anticipated Captain Marvel 2. With the success of the first movie, earning over $1 billion in the global box office, Marvel will surely make a sequel that will continue Carol Danvers' (Brie Larson) story. So, what tale will it tell next?
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige hinted Captain Marvel 2 might be another "period piece" that would be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's (MCU) past, via Screen Rant. So, there are assumptions the sequel might explore the history of Mar-Vell and Kree/Skrull war.
However, Feige noted there is a historical gap between when Carol escaped with Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) at the end of the movie and the time she arrived with the Avengers. Hence, Avengers: Endgame might tell where Captain Marvel had been all along since 1995, although there were still a lot of untold stories to tell in Captain Marvel 2.
Captain Marvel is said to be a prequel to the entire MCU by featuring the untold stories of the young Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), the idea for the Avengers Initiative, the Tesseract, and Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S.'s history. It also showed a cameo of the Guardians of the Galaxy villain Ronan the Accuser. From here, where Captain Marvel 2 would go?
There are theories the Kree/Skrull war will still be on in Captain Marvel 2. The conflict between the two civilizations seems unlikely to end, but there is a big question where Carol will be in the clash. Vers may take the side of Skrulls after learning Kree only used her, and it may be explored in the sequel, per TV Overmind.
There are also assumptions Captain Marvel 2 will be set after Avengers: Endgame. If it happens, the world of MCU will continue despite the Avengers' end. If Marvel brings back Captain Marvel, it will leave a lot of room for expansion for the character alone or a possible team up with another set of heroes.
Meanwhile, although Marvel has yet to confirm the making of Captain Marvel 2, there are also anticipations that it is set for 2021 release. There are only a few movies that are supposedly coming out in the said year. So, it might be safe to assume that if ever the sequel would be made, it would be released in that year.
The making of Captain Marvel 2 may be a big turnaround and a lot of work for the cast and crew, but it will surely make sense if fans see Carol once again in a sequel movie. Marvel may want Carol to be the new hero that will make a mark in viewers' mind, especially now that the Avengers is ending.
