The Good Doctor season 3 is poised to return in the 2019 fall season line-up on ABC. The drama series starring Freddie Highmore as Dr. Shaun Murphy, the doctor with savant-syndrome and autism, has been performing well in the ratings.
According to TV Line, The Good Doctor has a weekly average of 6.8 million viewers in its live airing, and this number jumps to 89 percent during DVR and VOD views. The show is the third biggest series on the Disney-owned network; hence, it was not surprising for ABC to grant a third season renewal.
The network, however, has not yet announced the premiere date of The Good Doctor season 3. However, there's a good chance that the series will be back by September 2019 to retain its Monday evening slot.
As of press time, production for The Good Doctor season 3 has not yet started. Things will likely be active on the set once again by mid-July or August.
Aside from Highmore, confirmed to return for The Good Doctor season 3 are Christina Chang (as Dr. Audrey Lim) and Nicholas Gonzalez (as Dr. Neil Melendez). Viewers will recall that Chang's character was promoted as the Chief of Surgery in the season finale of The Good Doctors season 2 last March. It was either her boyfriend, Dr. Melendez, and this will change the dynamics of their relationship, as per showrunner David Shore.
"As they say in that scene, either one of them resigns or they break up. Or, the third choice, which they don't mention in that scene, is that they go back to lying to everybody," Shore said via Entertainment Weekly. "Choices have to be made and certainly, certainly it's going to affect their relationship."
Also expected to return Aaron Schiff, whose character, Dr. Glassman, has beaten cancer. So now that he's in good health, Glassman will also resume with his work.
It's still unclear if there will be new faces in The Good Doctor season 3, but fans should expect new blood coming in just like last season. The addition of new characters, however, doesn't mean the exit of the other cast members. For now, Antonio Thomas (as Dr. Claire Brown), Will Yun Lee (as Dr. Alex Park) and Fiona Gubelmman (as Dr. Morgan Reznick) are still signed on to the show.
The Good Doctor season 3, however, might introduce potential love interests for Shaun. He'll start dating Carly (played by Jasika Nicole) and explore this new world in his adult life. Fans, however, are still hoping that Shaun will finally confess his feelings for Lea (played by Paige Lara).
