Tesla is bringing back its free unlimited Supercharging promotion, but with a catch. The free supercharging is only for new Tesla Model S and Tesla Model X vehicles in inventory that is pre-hardware-update.

For the first few years of the Tesla Model S and Tesla Model X program, unlimited free Supercharging has been one of the top perks that Tesla was offering to its customers. It was also linked to Tesla’s owner referral program, but the company decided to eliminate both options last year. These programs were necessary to make the brand known but was no longer necessary now that Tesla is a staple in the car industry.

Now, Tesla owner Elon Musk has brought them both back, for a different reason - Tesla has many inventory stocks of Tesla Model S and Tesla Model X pre-hardware update and needs to sell them out fast.

This Tesla promotion means that to get the unlimited Tesla supercharging rights, you would miss out on the new hardware changes of Tesla Model S and Model X allowing an increase in miles - wherein Model S gets 370 miles, and Model X gets 325 miles, new adaptive suspension and a power increase in the new motors.

The unlimited Tesla supercharging rights is also non-transferrable - not like the other promos before - so if the owner is planning to sold their pre-hardware update Tesla Model S and Model X, the second owner would not have the chance to avail unlimited supercharging.

So, is it worth it to buy the older model for free Supercharging? It depends. If you are fortunate enough to have a Tesla Level 2 system charger at home and is willing to charge your Tesla overnight at your house, then the promo may not be for you. If you are a regular commuter or traveller using Supercharger stations and doesn’t have access to the Level 2 system charger at your house, then it just might be.

Aside from unlimited free Tesla supercharging, another perk of choosing the new older-spec models is the good amount of price decrease. Tesla has given the pre-hardware update Tesla Model S and Model X. The pre-update 2019 Model S 100D is now only at $77900 while the new post-update model in the same trim and specs starts at $85000.Neither includes the company's so-called Full Self-Driving hardware.

In addition to the unlimited Tesla supercharging promo, the company also brought back its referral program. The program allows Tesla owners to have their own referral code and if someone buys through their code, the referrer and their referral will receive 1000 miles of free superchargers. Each referral also gives them the chance to enter a competition where one can win a Founders Series Model Y or Roadster supercar
