Fans of Jim Carrey's breakout comedy-drama Kidding have been eagerly awaiting news about the series after the positive feedback and strong ratings that it enjoyed during its pilot season last year. Showtime has picked up the series for a second season which will have 10 episodes like it did last season.
According to a report by Den of Geek, there is a strong possibility that Kidding Season 2 will premiere in the last quarter of the year. The show premiered in September last year, so it is likely that it will maintain its airing schedule and return mid-September, this year.
Jim Carrey, who received high praise for his return to television via Kidding, was hailed by critics for his poignant portrayal of a children's television show host who must wear a mask of joviality to hide his grief over the death of his son and the disintegration of his marriage. Carrey's character Jeff Piccirillo must also contend with watching his wife Jill (Judy Greer) move forward with her life with a new partner and work with his own father Seb (Frank Langella) on his television show amid their rocky relationship.
The first season of Kidding has so far maintained an 83 percent fresh rating from audiences on Tomatometer with critics echoing their feedback at a 76 percent fresh rating. Carrey was also nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor - Television Series, Musical or Comedy while the show received a nod for Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy.
The show's first season systematically focused on the portrayal of Jeff's grief as he unravels on the popular children's show Puppet Time. Kidding also touched on his process and the uniqueness of his journey and experience as he tries to communicate his feelings to his audience and the people around him.
In the last episode, Jeff finally gives a powerful speech on national television at the Tree Lighting Ceremony where he addresses the children but calls out their parents for their superficial parenting that does not truly address their children's needs. Jeff also criticizes parents for causing climate change and placing the burden of the future on their children when they would not act on actual problems. In a courageous move, he also acknowledges his role in the death of his son when he failed to listen to him when he was in need. By its end, he pulls off the biggest surprise for his fans.
It is expected that when the show returns for Kidding Season 2, Jeff will have to deal with the repercussions of his biggest bombshell. Some fans are expecting that he could lose his job for pulling the stunt on such a major scale. It is also expected to pick up after Jeff's confession that he still loves Jill so there is a possibility that the show could explore a reconciliation.
