Big Little Lies season 2 is arriving next month, and fans are excited to see once again the five mothers in Monterey, California. Here's everything we know so far about the forthcoming installment.
Based on Liane Moriarty's novel of the same name, the show first aired in 2017 and was initially assumed as a limited series. Fans online praised showrunner David E. Kelley for the season 1 finale, and the show ended up a huge success, so HBO ordered another season.
All major cast from the first season will be back, particularly the Monterey Five: Reese Witherspoon (Madeline Martha Mackenzie), Nicole Kidman (Celeste Wright), Laura Dern (Renata Klein), Zoë Kravitz(Bonnie Carlson), and Shailene Woodley (Jane Chapman). Also, Adam Scott (Ed Mackenzie) and James Tupper (Nathan Carlson) are expected to return in the second installment as well.
There will also be new faces in Big Little Lies season 2, such as Meryl Streep who will be joining the cast and will play Perry's mother and Celeste's mother-in-law, Mary Louise Wright. There were only a few details about the character, but photos showed Streep's character is sporting a wig.
Meanwhile, there are some recurring characters in the second season as well, such as Douglas Smith (as Corey Brockfield), Martin Donovan (Martin Howard), Poorna Jagannathan (Katie Richmond), and Denis O'Hare (Ira Farber).
As for the plot of Big Little Lies season 2, the aftermath of the affairs and bullying in the previous installment will reportedly continue, as well as the murder investigation by local detectives. The series has no published book sequel, but a 2017 report from Vulture revealed that Moriarty wrote a novella so she could flesh out concepts and ideas for the second season.
Thus, Kelley will move forward with new plot details regarding the aftermath of Perry's murder, which wasn't covered in the first novel. It can be recalled that in season 1, a local detective is observing the Monterey Five from afar, so the police aren't backing down in the new season, as well as the deceased's family.
The upcoming installment will have a new director as well; Andrea Arnold directed every episode of the second season. She's an English filmmaker who's known for her critically acclaimed films American Honey and Fish Tank. Kelley, on the other hand, is still being credited with writing each episode.
Big Little Lies season 2 will premiere on Sunday, June 9, on HBO.
