The world is still waiting for the fifth season of Better Call Saul yet there appears to be some trouble brewing for one of the AMC show's beloved characters. There are speculations that Giancarlo Esposito could be leaving the series shortly. Could this mean that Better Call Saul Season 6 will be the last one for Gustavo 'Gus' Fring?
Gus Fring has always been one of the most memorable characters in Breaking Bad. Unfortunately, the Chilean was killed in the fourth season and fans were concerned that they wouldn't get to see Gus again. However, all that changed when it was confirmed that Giancarlo Esposito would reprise the role in Breaking Bad's prequel series Better Call Saul. But is it time to say goodbye to Gus again soon?
The speculations started when Esposito somehow indicated in an interview that Better Call Saul would only run for six seasons. The Maze Runner: The Death Cure star initially stated that he wasn't sure how long the series would run considering that he only learns about what happens in the show when he receives the script. However, Esposito later made a different statement when talking about a new character who will be introduced in Season 5.
"You know, there's a new character coming in, 'Lalo' Salamanca, obviously someone I'm gonna have to deal with in my travels throughout the show," Esposito said. He then added, "There will be six seasons, it seems like that's the way, the comfortable way, to end this show."
Interestingly, it sounds like this simply might be Esposito's own opinion on how long the series should run. On the other hand, some believe that it could mean the Dear White People star is only to stay on the show for six seasons. After all, he has other projects to think about.
Esposito was recently cast in the Star Wars series The Mandalorian that will air on Disney's streaming service Disney+. His role in the show has not yet been revealed, but there is a possibility that Esposito will be part of the main cast along with Game of Thrones alum Pedro Pascal. With a new role in the horizon, Esposito might be preparing to say goodbye to Gus Fring.
It might be too soon to expect The Chicken Man to quietly leave Better Call Saul. After all, even if he only stays on until Season 6, fans could still see more of him in the fifth season.
Better Call Saul Season 5 is expected to air on AMC in 2020. It will soon be followed by the sixth season, hopefully in 2021.
