During the season finale, "Designated Survivor" Tom dropped multiple unresolved bombshells that can only be resolved with an extension of the series. In a national address, the President announced plans for re-election as an independent candidate who was a blow to his political party.

The possibility has been brewing throughout the season after Tom was shown bring torn by his loyalty to his political allies and the welfare of the nation. It is expected that this issue will play heavily in Season 3 when he attempts to resolve the nation's problems without political meddling, Cinemablend reported.

Tom was also on the verge of being charged for decisions he made earlier in the season. When Tom received the call from the Attorney General at the end of the episode, it was not yet revealed if, on top of launching a massive campaign, Kirkman would be dealing with criminal charges as well.

Fans are expecting that "Designated Survivor" Season 3 will focus on Tom Kirkman's presidential campaign which is bound to face difficulties without the support of his former political party. It is also expected that he may be faced with a demolition job from those who do not want to see him on a fresh term in the White House.

According to Screenrant, the synopsis hints that in addition to his political turmoil, the President may be faced with personal conflicts as well. Now that his wife is dead, it is expected that Tom will be dealing with his grief as well as the responsibilities of raising his son alone and sending him off to college.

The synopsis also hints that his moral compass will be challenged with seeking a fresh mandate for the White House as he battles black propaganda, fake news, debates, and lack of political machinery.
