Sonic the Hedgehog is finally coming to the big screen, but a new release date was set for the movie after it received criticisms from fans because of its look. To satisfy everyone, Sonic's look will be redesigned, and instead of a November 2019 release date, the movie has been moved for a February 14, 2020 release date.
The official look of Sonic the Hedgehog movie was first teased on a shadowed poster, but while it appears somehow accurate in the video game, it was still criticized by many. And when the movie trailer was released at the end of April, it further received negative responses from fans and has many dislikes than likes. Many weren't happy about the movie, particularly with the character's look.
It seems like the film is trying to make the character looks like a real-world animal, but the idea backfired. And just a few days after the trailer was released, director Jeff Fowler announced that Sonic the Hedgehog movie will have a new release date to have more time to redesign Sonic's look. Then, he took to Twitter again and posted an image, confirming the film will arrive on February 14, 2020.

There are some things to note in the photo, as Sonic is now sporting his classic white gloves and the Sonic logo under the new release date is similar to the logo from the games. But then, the image also shows that Sonic still has blue arms, but his arms in the core game are beige. Sonic Boom's redesign for the character features him with blue arms, which might work there.
Fowler hasn't confirmed what are the changes with Sonic's look, but it seems like the team at Paramount wanted to make the character's design more faithful to the game. Some believe that making the character more realistic in the film isn't a bad idea. However, a lot of fans were used to Sonic's look in the video game.
Sonic Boom's redesign becomes controversial as well, but it managed to retain the core aspects of the character in the game. Thus, Sonic the Hedgehog movie is possibly redesigning and mixing Sonic Boom's with the core games' design, and they added some aspects from the original design of the movie.
Meanwhile, as for the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog movie, Ben Schwartz will voice Sonic, while James Marsden will play Tom Wachowski; the cop who helps Sonic navigating his life on Earth. Jim Carrey, on the other hand, plays the role of the supervillain, Dr. Robotnik, who's capturing Sonic and wants to use his power to dominate the world.
