Selena Gomez's latest accessory has taken statement necklaces to a whole other level. The singer can be seen wearing a delicate gold necklace that has the year "1973" on it, in an Instagram picture posted by the renowned stylist Kate Young.

So what exactly is the significance of the year in the singer's necklace?

Apparently, the year 1973 marks a historical and very significant event for women's reproductive health. It was the year of the Roe v. Wade case in the Supreme Court, where a woman's right to get an abortion if she chose to do so, was first recognized and legalized in the United States.

The gold necklace was made and designed by Sophie Ratner Jewelry, a jewelry company in collaboration with Physicians for Reproductive Health.

On the Sophie Ratner Jewelry website, some information on the elegant piece on Gomez's neck was shared as well as a little background on its significance. The necklace is said to be designed and created in 2018 by Ratner herself. The accessory was made in order to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the iconic Supreme Court Roe v. Wade decision.

The jewelry company donates around 30% of their sales from their lavish necklaces and bracelets that come in all sorts of sizes and vary in material. Most are made of pure gold or silver and are encrusted with dozens of diamonds.

The said percentage of proceeds go to the Physicians for Reproductive Health organization whose main goal is to improve the quality of reproductive health care services and offers access to contraception and abortion to people who are economically disadvantaged and cannot afford to spend for their own reproductive health.

The organization's vision and their efforts to carry that vision out is both relevant and timely in the Unites Stated today. This is considering the recent political agenda of banning and making abortions illegal and unobtainable for pregnant women who are at least three weeks in. The very future of Roe v. Wade has become questionable, as people have been denied certain reproductive health care services.

This is not the only time that the singer and actress has shown her support for the necessity and importance of reproductive health care. Earlier in May, the star took to her Instagram to post about the abortion restrictions now being implemented in states such as Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi.

She writes about how upsetting it is to look around and see what is going on today and expresses how she cannot believe the question of reproductive health choices are still being asked in 2019. She goes on to say that women answer to no one with regards to decisions about their body and how it is nobody's business to tell women what they should do with their selves.

Alongside Gomez, a handful of other celebrities have also shown their outrage for the reproductive health care restrictions that were recently legislated. Stars like Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, and even Mark Ruffalo have shown their support for the cause in their own way. A number of A-list celebrities have also vowed to boycott any state which implements these reproductive health restrictions.
