Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip have been married for more than 70 years, but the royal couple reportedly spent more time apart ever since the Duke of Edinburgh retired from his duties. Here's why Her Majesty and her husband don't live together.

Just recently, Prince Philip celebrated his 98th birthday, and he's reportedly the oldest living member of the British royal family. He and Queen Elizabeth were married for almost 72 years and has been a loyal supporter of his wife since then.

But in 2017, the Duke retired from the royal life, and he reportedly spent most of his time in Norfolk, while Her Majesty stays in Windsor. The royal couple tied the knot on November 20, 1947, and during their golden wedding in 1997, Queen Elizabeth said her husband is someone who does not take easily to compliments. She added that her husband had been her strength, and she "owed" him a debt.

Ever since Prince Philip retired from his royal duties, he reportedly split his time between Wood Farm, Norfolk and Buckingham Palace. While the Duke enjoys a slower pace of his life, Her Majesty is busy with her royal duties in Windsor.

According to a royal source from the Daily Mail, the monarch reportedly feels her husband earned a "proper retirement." The insider also noted the Queen knows the Duke so well, so if ever he's still at the center of the royal life he'd always feel like he had to be involved. While he wasn't that far at Wood Farm, he's still far enough to relax.

Prince Philip isn't reportedly obliged to attend any royal events, and he reportedly enjoyed his time staying active, reading and painting in Norfolk. But previously, the Duke attended the royal wedding of at Lady Gabriella Windsor with Queen Elizabeth, and he was spotted laughing with other guests.

Meanwhile, it can be noted he reportedly gave up his job in the navy in 1952 just to support his wife after she became a Queen. A royal expert claims that Prince Philip has been a "huge support" to Queen Elizabeth throughout her reign and he could relax more when he's away at the Buckingham Palace.

Majesty Magazine's editor Joe Little said the Duke of Edinburgh divides his time, but he spends more time in Norfolk than in Berkshire since things are more relaxed there. But even though he is away from his wife for weeks, the two reportedly speak on the phone every day.
