Toy Story 4 has just recently hit the big screen and it was once again another success for the franchise. But while the fourth installment is still out on theaters, many fans started wondering if there will be a Toy Story 5. Right now, the answer to that remains uncertain but Tom Hanks, who voiced Woody since the first movie, teased the possibility of another installment.
It can be noted that Toy Story 4 was the sequel fans didn't know they're getting. But, reports surfaced the movie was in progress even before Toy Story 3 was released to cinemas. And then, fans initially believed the fourth installment is the last for the franchise, but that seems to be unlikely now.
In an interview with Ladbible, Hanks said no one is currently planning on Toy Story 5. But, he added that he wouldn't be surprised if two-and-a-half years from now someone will have an idea that could make it happen. The actor also revealed none of the Toy Story movies were actually scheduled and they weren't in "pipeline."
Hanks added they don't say they'll start working on the next Toy Story on a specific date as they usually wait until someone has an idea that's worthwhile pursuing. The actor also said he's still willing to portray Woody, yet he admitted all of them came to the point where they started asking if they still want to try doing it.
Meanwhile, Toy Story producer also hints there's an open door for Toy Story 5. During the Disney Pixar's press day for the fourth installment, Mark Nielsen said that every film they make, they treat it as if it's the first and last movie they make. He said it would be tomorrow's problem whether or not there'll be another one.
In addition, if Toy Story 5 will be given a green light by Pixar, the movie will not be made that quickly. First, it needed a long time to perfect its animation before making it to the big screen. Cast and crew appointments, script writing, and voice recording should be taken into account as well.
Aside from that, there are other Pixar movies on the line, so the earliest release date for Toy Story 5 would 2024. However, considering the development time of the franchise, there's an 11-year gap between the second and third movie, while a 9-year gap for the third and fourth film. So, if ever, fans will see the fifth installment on cinemas in the late 2020s.
