The M Performance car division of BMW plans to expand its production by adding more M Performance and full-blown M models. A range of models from the new M135i xDrive to a 608hp version of the upcoming X8 SUV will be produced. The division plans to top its line-up and to show its engineering supremacy by developing a bespoke mid-engined coupé based on the Vision M Next.

BMW projects a high-tech hybrid future because of their latest concept points. The company already imposed significant restructuring measures to ensure the long-term competitiveness of more volume-selling M models against a growing number of competitors, including Audi Sport, Jaguar SVO, Mercedes-AMG, and Porsche.

The company ensures a quip ramp-up of its model portfolio through its wide-ranging engineering program under a plan that was first initiated by Frank van Meel, the former CEO of the M division. The plan was carried through by his successor, Markus Flasch.

BMW has already launched new M models in 2019 including the X3 M, X4 M, M8 Coupé and M8 Convertible. The new M135i xDrive and X2 M35i were also introduced. The company is examining proposals for limited-run M models that are inspired by the Vision M Next concept. They are currently considering a convertible version alongside the planned "reborn M1" coupé.

Flasch said at the launch of the BMW X3 M and X4 M that they are investigating M variants that may also be stand-alone without a predecessor. The company also plans to expand its number of hardcore CS models, initially building the new M2 CS in 2020.

The company's research and development head, Klaus Fröhlich, is the key driving force in the company's decision to build its current number of M models. Mr. Fröhlich once headed the engineering at Land Rover and became a member of BMW's board in 2014.

Autocar said that plans have now been approved for a new four-wheel-drive four-cylinder 1 Series with up to 400bhp. BMW's cars will compete against the strong selling Audi RS3 and Mercedes-AMG A45, as well as the upcoming Volkswagen Golf R Plus.

BMW is also developing a new M X8 model that is rumored to compete with the Audi RS8, the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 and the Porsche Cayenne Turbo. Tuned versions of standard BMW engines in petrol diesel and the petrol-electric plug-in will be continued by the upcoming M Performance models. The company plans to run one of the three key BMW M petrol engines from a modular driveline family similar to the one used by the Mercedes-AMG.
