It has been several years since the world last enjoyed a Shrek movie and the wait might continue for a couple more. People have been hoping that the fifth Shrek film would be released by 2020. Unfortunately, there are speculations that Dreamworks Animation is putting its focus on a different yet related project in the next few months. Is it possible that Shrek 5 has been pushed back in favor of Puss In Boots 2?
The first Puss In Boots movie was released back in 2011 and it served as a prequel to the Shrek movies. In the animated feature, Puss works with Humpty Dumpty and Kitty Softpaws to go up against the criminal duo Jack and Jill. Although there were speculations that Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy would both show up in the film, Antonio Banderas was the only voice actor from Shrek that appeared in the spin-off. However, some fans believe that will change in the sequel.
There are speculations that Puss In Boots 2 will once again be a prequel taking place before the swashbuckling cat meets Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey. The storyline has not yet been revealed but it already has a working title that hints at what to look forward to. Puss in Boots 2: Nine Lives & 40 Thieves could follow Puss as he searches for the mysterious cave mentioned in the story collection 'Arabian Nights'. By the end of the movie, Puss could then be given the mission that was assigned to him in Shrek 2.
It's certainly a great way to edge into the Shrek Universe while using its most marketable character. On the other hand, it is important to note that Puss In Boots 2 has not yet been given an official release date. Although it was initially scheduled for a 2018 premiere, the sequel has been postponed indefinitely.
But what are the chances that both Shrek and Puss in Boots will be rebooted? It has already been confirmed that Michael McCullers will be working on the screenplay for both sequels. Although fans are hoping that the screenwriter will complete work on Shrek 5 first, there is also a possibility that McCullers' priority is Puss In Boots 2. This could mean that McCullers will not be able to complete the Shrek script before Puss' standalone movie.
For now, Dreamworks has not made any official announcements about Shrek 5 or Puss In Boots 2. Nevertheless, many fans believe that the studio has something awesome to announce before the end of 2018.
