Being the first son of Queen Elizabeth II, it only makes sense that Prince Charles is the rightful heir to the throne. The Queen had been preparing her firstborn for a long time to be the future ruler of England.
Since he is the next in line to take over Queen Elizabeth’s post, Her Majesty had already turned over major responsibilities to Prince Charles. Knowing how important his Royal duties are, the Prince of Wales obliged to all these tasks.
However, Royal insiders believe that Prince Charles should abdicate the throne in favor of another member of the family. While Prince William is the most expected to follow his father’s footsteps, insiders thought that there is a high chance that the Prince of Wales would give up the throne for his younger brother, Prince Andrew.
The speculation was based on the age of Prince Charles. Queen Elizabeth’s eldest son was born in 1948, making him 70 years old at the moment. With that said, many thought that he might not want to spend his final days ruling the monarchy.
Although if things should be based on succession rules, Prince William should be the next king if Prince Charles decided to abdicate the throne. However, being the younger brother of the future king, Prince Andrew is very much a valid candidate to be the next ruler.
Also, Prince Andrew is much older than Prince William; he has more experience than the Duke of Cambridge, making him a better choice for the position. As if that’s not enough, earlier reports revealed that the Duke of York is Queen Elizabeth’s favorite child.
"Prince Andrew is the Queen’s favorite son. He was heroic during the Falklands War – she has a soft spot for him,“ royal historian Piers Brendon said.
"Andy skipped university and went straight to naval college, which went down well with his naval officer father,” Journalist and broadcaster Jeremy Paxman said. “He completed the Marines Commando course, just to show he could, before qualifying as a helicopter pilot. Then, aged just 22, he fought in the Falklands."
However, the heir to the throne is not going to be based on who’s the favorite or not. But if the next king will be decided through popularity, Britons chose Prince William over Prince Andrew in a recent Daily Star Online poll to be the future ruler of England.
