Wynonna Earp Season 3 premiered on July 16, 2018, on Syfy. And just a few days after its arrival, Syfy and Space announced that a fourth season of the show has been commissioned already. Therefore, the networks are looking at a 2019 release for the upcoming season.
But earlier this year, the fans were surprised when several reports have circulated around the media that Wynonna Earp Season 4 might not arrive according to its original air date schedule. Unfortunately, the reports were confirmed by the production and revealed that they are experiencing financial difficulties.
As a result, the production and preparation for the new season will be delayed and moved to a much later date this year. And accordingly, the premiere date of the new season will also be pushed back. Instead of having a new season release this 2019, Wynonna Earp Season 4 will arrive in 2020.
According to Deadline, the financial difficulties that the production is experiencing is due to the funding issues at IDW. It is worth noting that the show is based on the IDW comic series. So, the funding is largely dependent on the company.
The initial statement of IDW earlier this year contended that the financial issues are in the aspect of “losing money” on the show. But later on, it has been revealed that the parent company, IDW Media Holdings, is actually facing serious challenges as there was a huge net loss during the second quarter of the year.
One of the main aspects being looked upon is the fact that Wynonna Earp lost its “international distribution” agreement with Netflix. But even so, there were reports recently that state that Syfy will be paying a much higher fee for the new season’s license than the amount agreed upon the contract. And this is to actually help the production continue the show.
Alongside these positive reports, it has been also revealed that Syfy already ordered a new season aside from the upcoming fourth installment. Hence, it is very likely that the fans will get to see two new seasons of Wynonna Earp starting in 2020.
So far, these are the only details that have been shared about the series. And since the production is set to start later this year, then it is possible that newer details will be given to the fandom before 2019 ends.
It is also worth noting that the San Diego Comic-Con is about to arrive this July. And during the three-day event starting from July 18, Cartermatt hints that a panel from the popular show will be present to announce details about the upcoming fourth season.
