Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew are one of the most mysterious couples in the royal family; they got married in 1986 but divorced in 1996. Despite that, the two are reportedly still living under the same roof, which means they're like a normal family. Now, reports say that a tragic family story has reinforced them to live together.
Prince Andrew and Ferguson are still friends even though they've been separated for many years. The two were frequently seen going on several royal engagements together, such as during the Bahrain Grand Prix this year. The two were accompanied by their eldest daughter, Princess Beatrice, and her boyfriend, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.
Ferguson revealed there's a reason why she and the Duke of York are still living together. A tragic story of a royal family reportedly struck her mind, and she promised to keep her family together even though she and Prince Andrew have separated.
In an interview, the Duchess of York said she's referring to the story of Princess Louise, the mother of Prince Albert and the great-great-great-grandmother of Queen Elizabeth. She shared how the Princess suffered from a fate that's "hard to imagine."
According to Ferguson, Princess Louise was reportedly discarded by her husband, Ernst I, the Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, and then she was sent to St. Wendel. She said the Princess had to leave her two boys when she and her husband separated. And for the Duchess of York, never seeing her daughters - like what Princess Louise experienced - was beyond words for her.
Ferguson was recently in Germany for a documentary retracing the life of Louise, and she said she couldn't even imagine being forbidden from seeing Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie. The Duchess shared she don't know what it would be like for her not being with her two daughters and couldn't fathom it.
However, the fate of Princess Louise would unlikely happen to Ferguson since she and Prince Andrew both love their daughters. The Duchess shared they work in unity and focused on being good parents together. She also explained why they were still friends until now despite the things that happened to them in the past.
Ferguson said they were bigger than friends, as they learn, support, and understand each other. She said it's all about compassion, communication, and compromise. And even though they were already divorced, some things never changed between them. In 2013, she referred to her ex-husband as her "handsome prince."
