DC Universe has released its newest live-action series, Swamp Thing, on May 31 of this year. The series is based on its DC Comic counterpart that carries the same title. With its superhero-horror theme and dynamic, the series immediately picked up its audience, especially the avid fans of the comic series.
But while the viewership ratings and numbers are pretty impressive after the pilot episode, DC Universe canceled the show a few days after the premiere.
There were no details as to why the network has decided to drop the series. Despite its good reception, it seemingly appears that DC Universe did not consider this factor. As a result, many fans were quite surprised by the network's ultimate decision about the status of Swamp Thing.
But according to Deadline, there are a few speculations that have been concluded about the apparent decision. As it appears, it might have something to do with the recent acquisition of Time Warner by AT&T. Although the details are not clear, the cancellation announcement happened following the business movements made by the media companies.
Another aspect being looked upon is the production conflicts that Swamp Thing faced with the state of North Carolina earlier this year. As it happens, the show's production location occurred in North Carolina.
As per The Verge, the state has promised its production company and distributor, Warner Bros. Television, a "multi-million" tax rebate to balance the production costs. But to everyone's surprise, the grant did not proceed as there were not enough funds for this.
While the blame has been placed on the state's funding conflicts, North Carolina's Department of Commerce returns the favor to Warner Bros. Television. As per the state's reports, the blame lies with the company as they knew the status of the fundings and grants, but still went on with the production of the show. But whatever the case, only one thing is certain - Swamp Thing will not return for a new season.
As of the time being, the show is now six episodes deep. And with only four episodes left for the installment, the fans would need to enjoy them more and savor the last few moments of the series as these episodes will already be the last of it.
On another note, Titans has been renewed for another season. But as for Doom Patrol, there are no further announcements made yet if the show will continue. As for Swamp Thing, Episode 7 titled, Brilliant Disguise, is set to air on July 12, on DC Universe.
