Princess Diana left her marriage with Prince Charles with a large sum of money, some of her jewelry and an apartment in Kensington Palace. But what she left without was her two sons, growing to be adolescents, needing her love and guidance, and the security and title she needed to help and inspire more people.

It wasn't easy for Diana, Princess of Wales to have a failed marriage, after undergoing one herself with her mother and father. The feeling of abandonment from her mother as she left the Spencer estate made her want to have a solid family of her own. Unfortunately, she didn't get all of her wishes.

As always been reported by various royal documentaries and news source, Princess Diana wanted to save her marriage, but it was already doomed from the start. Prince Charles was forced to marry Lady Diana Spencer, and it was directed by his father, the Duke of Edinburgh's insistence.

According to royal biographer Andrew Morton of the book William and Catherine, Prince William had to find out the bitter truth from the books published for Prince of Wales in 1994, revealing how his father, Prince Charles "did not love his mother after all." From there, the Duke of Cambridge had to confront his mother about the ongoing trouble in their family.

Princess Diana had to say all sorts of reasons from loving each other when they first married and now loved their children even more. Although Princess Diana, tried her best to lessen the hurt that Prince William was feeling at that time, the 12-year old young royal already now the realities of it.

So until her Panorama Interview in 1995, the mother of two held on to her marriage with Prince Charles amid his growing affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles. The Queen, however, wanted to end it when the scandal has already reached too much public knowledge, and the children are already being bothered.

It was not until a year after that private letter from the Queen; the divorce was finalized, making Princess Diana apart from the Royal Family. This entails not being able to enjoy royal security, and giving up a large part of her charity work, however, she has been given an allowance of $600,000 to help with her office costs which are still situated in Kensington Palace, apartment 8 and 9.

Private jets are still made available for her traveling purposes the Queen was generous enough to let her borrow the halls in St. James' Palace upon her approval. Although the royal perks were still there, Princess Diana was removed from her title as "Her Royal Highness" and had to be satisfied with the Queen's offer to retain her as "Diana, Princess of Wales."

The only piece she wasn't allowed to keep was the Cambridge Lover's Knot tiara that Queen Elizabeth II had passed down to her then-daughter-in-law as a wedding present. Still, Princess Diana approves of the outcome of her tiara as it was passed on to her daughter-in-law, Kate Middleton.

Aside from that, the late royal still enjoyed invitations to royal events, and she did get to keep a few key players of her staff, from her chef, cleaner, and even her dresser. Having joint custody of her sons with Prince Charles, Princess Diana got to have her kids at her home in Kensington Palace; she was known to let them eat decidedly un-royal foods like pizza, fried chicken, and potato skins. The boys also got to spend half their holidays with their mom.
