Game of Thrones Season 8 received a lot of complaints and even a petition for a remake when fans didn't like how it went through. So at the recent convention, Con of Thrones, in Nashville, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who played as Jaime Lannister, addressed all the issues the show has faced and defended showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss.
As the small fan Q&A panel, Coster-Waldau described the online criticisms the show received as "intense," to the point that it was even their topic in their WhatsApp group chat. Although the 48-year-old star admitted that every season had been intense, the final installment was "extraordinarily" ardent.
He went on to say the actors and him "saw some people getting upset" due the vicious stuff Game of Thrones Season 8 had, per HuffPost. And if they read all of the bad comments and learned fans got angry about the show, they knew they were being blamed.
Some viewers suggested the series should have taken a different path, while others complained that they ruined the world George R.R. Martin created. As the criticisms seemed to be "just fun" for others, Coster-Waldau admitted they got a "little upset."
"There was that kind of weird feeling of, 'What the hell? We worked so hard,'" he continued to say. "I'm not asking anyone to feel sorry, by the way. That's not what I'm saying. I'm just saying how it was to get through that whole thing."
Aside from the actors, of course, the complaints also affected Benioff and Weiss. The Shot Caller star said they were so lucky to be part of a series where people care so much that they also got upset when Game of Thrones Season 8 didn't go the way they wanted to. He even found the love the show got as fantastic and sarcastically said he loved that there was an online petition, asking for the whole season to be rewritten.
Winter is Coming noted Coster-Waldau said it is unfair to say Benioff and Weiss "are not the most passionate, the greatest, and the most invested of all" when it comes to creating the final season's ending. It was also kind of silly to accuse them when they had invested the last 10 years of their lives doing the show.
Coster-Waldau added complaining fans should understand Benioff and Weiss are also reading the show's comments and see how they are being cussed and blamed. So just like everyone in the world of Game of Thrones Season 8, and there are thousands of people in it from staff and crew, they all worked so hard to make the best ending they could.
