The new Nissan Skyline sedan packs not only powerful hardware, but it also has some pretty impressive software tucked into it as well. There is a slight twist though; the new Nissan Skyline will be branded as an Infiniti Q50.
Car enthusiast and the community as a whole are excited that Nissan is releasing a new Skyline. Some have even hinted about the possibility of a new Nissan Skyline GT-R. However, that is not the same Skyline that Nissan unveiled on Tuesday.
The new Nissan Skyline, a.k.a the Infiniti Q50, packs quite a handful of new features both under the hood and on its tech. This is the first car that Nissan will release that will feature the company's newest ProPilot 2.0 system.
It comes as no surprise that almost every car manufacturer nowadays are delving into the tech industry. Some have even signed partnerships with notable tech companies. This is part of the effort of the auto industry to develop autonomous and self-driving vehicles. Nissan's ProPilot 2.0 is just one of those.
Nissan said that the ProPilot 2.0 is an upgraded version of its ProPilot Assist system which is also decent in its own right. Among the groundbreaking features, the 2.0 update brings is driver monitoring, which will allow a car to function completely hands-free.
Nissan also installed monitoring systems inside the car in order to make sure that drivers do not get overly reliant on the ProPilot 2.0 features. If the system detects that the driver is no longer paying attention, it will give out an alert. ProPilot 2.0 is programmed to turn the hazard lights on and put the car to a complete stop should the driver fail to react to the alert.
Under the hood, the new Skyline has the VR30DDTT engine, the same one found on the Infiniti Q50 and Q60. While not entirely new, this engine is a significant upgrade compared to the previous generation Skyline's four-cylinder engine sourced from Mercedes-Benz and the VQ35HR naturally aspirated V6 hybrid engine. Though the hybrid V6 engine is still an option for the new Nissan Skyline, other hardware upgrades include new adaptive suspension and steering.
The Skyline Hybrid has a 3.5-liter V6 engine coupled with an electric motor. The system is capable of outputting 359-horsepower delivering it on all four wheels. There is also a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine that has 400-horsepower but is only available in two rear-wheel drivetrains.
On the outside, Nissan is making huge changes in order to make the Skyline have that GT-R look and feel. It now has Nissan's V-motion grille, a reworked rear-end, and the company's classic circular taillight design.
