Game of Thrones Prequel is now in the works, but it looks like fans are craving to see something else. Viewers have been clamoring to see the continuation of Arya Stark's (Maisie Williams) story after she sailed to West of Westeros, leaving her tale open with a possibility to continue.
West of Westeros is relatively unknown to both Game of Thrones viewers and A Song of Ice and Fire readers. Hence, the only chance for them to know about the unknown land is by having an Arya spinoff.
Although HBO seems to have no plans to continue Arya's journey, Williams herself is open to doing it if this happens. "If they invent zips and do not have leather costumes that are laced up, that would be cool," she told Entertainment Weekly at the recent 2019 San Diego Comic-Con.
Seemed surprised by her statement, Liam Cunningham, who played Davos Seaworth, asked Williams if that is she would ever need. The 22-year-old star asserted that it is all she wanted and even assured fans would love it.
When Game of Thrones Season 8 ended, fans wanted to see more adventures of Arya, especially after her incredible character development. They even made a campaign on Twitter to have HBO do a spinoff series about her.
In another talk with Tings Magazine, Williams said she doesn't think there would be a Game of Thrones spinoff about Arya. However, she admitted playing the role again "would be wonderful." She even revealed she is missing her character. But as the show has to rest, she believes something will come along the way for her.
As showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have moved on from the Game of Thrones world, Williams feels like it would be strange to do it all again without them. Also, HBO programming president Casey Bloys earlier said the network is not interested in doing any sequel series, and most of its cast members are "noncommittal."
In an earlier interview with Deadline, as Arya's story was left wide open, Bloys knew where fans were coming from. However, they wanted to be careful not overdoing the series. After eight seasons, they wanted to leave the show as "its work of art" and not have direct shows, like an Arya spinoff.
So they will be doing a Game of Thrones Prequel instead, exploring other parts of George R.R. Martin's massive, fictional world. "Just feels like the right thing to do, let the show stand on its own," Bloys said.
