There's still a couple of weeks left for voting but BLINKs, the official BLACKPINK fandom is hard at work in trending Jennie, Lisa, Jisoo and Rose's hashtag for MTV UK's Hottest Summer Superstar award.
BLACKPINK is currently maintaining the third spot out of 50 international artists nominated for the award with 2,131,311 votes at live polls. The girls are currently trailing BTS with 5,478, 234 tweets from their formidable ARMY fandom and 2017 winner Lady Gaga with 2,458,930 from her Little Monsters.
There's still a long way to go until the winner is announced on August 24 by MTV UK, but BLINKs seem to have their work cut out for them by making BLACKPINK trend daily with the hashtag. To vote for their favorite Kpop act, BLINKs have been tweeting #mtvhottest BLACKPINK since the announcement of their nomination on July 20.
Only BLACKPINK and BTS are counted among the 50 international artists nominated for the awards. The recognition is quite a testament to the two Kpop groups' strong brand, not only in Asia but in Europe. Their rankings in the live polls also prove the unity of ARMY, and BLINK, the official fandoms of BTS and BLACKPINK.
BTS and BLACKPINK are also nominated in MTV's Best Kpop Category. BLACKPINK's Kill This Love is the only female Kpop group entry in the list while BTS' collaboration with Halsey is also competing in the same category. Boy with Luv is also nominated in VMAs' Best Choreography, Best Collaboration, and Best Direction category.
To vote for the MTV VMAs, fans have to go to the MTV Video Music Awards official website where the polls are open for the different categories. Fans are allowed to vote up to 10 times per day per category, so there is an equal chance for everyone to root for their favorites. To vote, fans have to log in using their Google or Twitter accounts or their email.
Voting for the MTV VMAs is open until August 15 while results will be announced on August 26 at the Newark Prudential Center in New Jersey. It is unsure whether BTS or BLACKPINK will be attending the ceremony.
While some have welcomed the nomination for the Kpop acts, many fans have hit the introduction of the Best Kpop category to marginalize the achievements of Kpop groups in the international music scene. According to fans, Kpop artists are more than capable of going toe to toe with global superstars and dismissed the MTV move as racist.
