There is no denying that The Winds of Winter remains to be one of the much-awaited novels up to this writing. George R.R. Martin has been working for the sixth book for the A Song of Ice and Fire series for almost a decade now. However, the veteran author revealed that the highly anticipated tome is not yet done.

Though there are limited details about the possible publication date of The Winds of Winter, George R.R. Martin has been giving hints on when fans should expect it to hit the shelves. As a matter of fact, in June,  GRRM revealed he is hopeful that the sixth volume of the A Song of Ice and Fire book series would be out by the middle of 2020.

The brain behind the Game of Thrones series wrote, on his "Not A Blog" blog, that would grace the Hugo Awards 2020 at the World Science Fiction Convention in Wellington, New Zealand. "But I tell you this - if I don't have THE WINDS OF WINTER in hand when I arrive in New Zealand for worldcon, you have here my formal written permission to imprison me in a small cabin on White Island, overlooking that lake of sulfuric acid, until I'm done," George R.R. Martin said of the upcoming The Winds of Winter release. "Just so long as the acrid fumes do not screw up my old DOS word processor, I'll be fine," the veteran novelist went on.

In 2017, George R.R. Martin projected that The Winds of Winter release in "late 2018 or early 2019," which, obviously, did not happen. Hence, some fans remain skeptical about GRRM's latest forecast. There were even a number of followers of the A Song of Ice and Fire series saying that the sixth and seventh book might not be completed at all since the Games of Thrones series revealed its ending already. Despite this, the veteran writer is optimistic that he would be able to deliver what is expected from him.

Meanwhile, other reports claimed that George R.R. Martin almost released The Winds of Winter in 2015. GRRM revealed, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, that he had been feeling "a tremendous amount of pressure for years now" mostly because of his desperate attempt to stay ahead of the Game of Thrones television series.

Reports have it that it was in 2015 when George R.R. Martin released that he could no longer keep up with the HBO show. Speculations suggested that GRRM and his editor planned to publish The Winds of Winter in December 2015. But, obviously, it did not happen due to various reasons.

Despite the countless delays, George R.R. Martin said that he would finish the book even if he does not want to rush it. "I don't only want to finish it, I want to make it as good as I possibly can. Since then there's been pressure but not like there was at that point," he said. There's no longer a race. The show is over. I'm writing the book. It will be done when it's done," GRRM furthered.
