Shawn Porter has a hunch that his upcoming opponent Errol Spence is not giving him the respect he is due and that he is underestimating him. Despite this, Porter said that this would be his biggest advantage once the two of them steps into the ring on September 28 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
In a press conference, Porter said, "Honestly, I think probably the fact the he may be underestimating me. I think that's gonna be the No.1 thing. I don't think he's really aware of what I can do in the ring."
Spence immediately refuted Porter's claim saying, "I'm definitely not underestimating Shawn Porter."
Spence said that he is confident that he can dominate the fight once the two of them steps into the ring. Spence, who has not lost a fight, is currently the world IBF welterweight champion. He believes that the fight against Porter will by tough and extremely physical.
During the same press conference, Spence put out a bold statement claiming that he will deliver a knockout game against Porter. The 31-year-old Porter had conceded only two fights in his career, one against Kell Brook in a tightly contested majority decision in 2014, and his second defeat came by way of a unanimous decision against former WBC champion Keith Thurman in 2016.
The upcoming fight between Spence and Porter will be on Pay-Per-View, and this is Spence's second PPV fight in a row. His last being against fellow undefeated fighter Mikey Garcia which yielded an impressive 360,000 buys.
Currently, at the top of the welterweight division sits Floyd Mayweather. However, there are rumors that the undefeated boxer is planning to hang his gloves soon. If this is true, this will create a void in the division. Spence is one of the top favorites of many boxing analysts to fill that void.
On the other hand, there is still the veteran Manny Pacquiao who just recently won his fight against Thurman, essentially solidifying his claim as one of the most exciting and formidable opponents in the division. Although Pacquiao has had his few shares of losses, his recent win against Thurman has helped cemented his claim as one of the top athletes of the division.
Spence understood Pacquiao's reputation and has since requested a shot at the Filipino boxing legend. There are rumors claiming that Pacquiao is steering his way clear out of Spence's target. Considering the fact that he is already 40-years-old.
