La Reina del Sur Season 2 has made waves on the small screen. The show's return after a long hiatus proves to be a big hit as it started to rake hits, making Telemundo the number one network on its timeslot.
On Monday alone, the show had 2.2 million viewers and 1.1 million in the adults 18-49 demographic, per Variety. This rating was strong enough to put down all its rival series, making it number one.
It has solidified its lead over its rival network, Univision, in primetime in adults 18-49 and 18-34. Throughout its 60-episode run, it managed to keep Telemundo on the top three networks list despite the language and in the adults 18-49 and 18-34 demos in its timeslot and airing day.
"We have had exceptional results from La Reina especially in this period where the television industry is facing many challenges," Telemundo Global Studios president and show's executive producer Marcos Santana. La Reina del Sur Season 2 also set records when it comes to social media engagements for the network.
The original, 2011 La Reina del Sur became Telemundo's milestone series due to the mark it left as a new iteration of the telenovela genre. As it aired on weekdays, it only featured half the number of episodes the usual telenovela had.
Its storyline was designed to run for multiple seasons, which was also different from other Spanish-language TV, although it took years before Season 2 started. It is also edgier compared to other telenovelas of today.
La Reina del Sur Season 2 continues the story of Teresa Mendoza, who becomes a drug cartel boss. The role is played by Kate del Castillo, the telenovela royalty in Mexico.
Although the 46-year-old star is best known for her role as Teresa today, she has appeared in different international movies, Broadway shows, television series, and web-novelas. She has been famous for more than a decade before she is known in Hollywood and other TV roles. Hence, she is one of the most sought-after talents in her country, per Belatina.
However, although she has been known since her teenage years, her role as Teresa raises the international stardom that turns her into a "global cultural phenomenon." She is now using her fame to change the way people see Latino women.
Meanwhile, Telemundo dubbed La Reina del Sur Season 2 as the most ambitious series produced from U.S. Spanish-language TV. However, it remains to be seen if there will be La Reina del Sur Season 3. But if they find another solid story, there will surely be a new installment.
