It is quite difficult to imagine Kate Middleton and Prince William separated from each other. But as it happened, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge faced huge break-ups before getting engaged and married. It happened twice in between the two decades of being "romantically involved."

According to Express UK, Kate Middleton and Prince William were good friends after meeting each other back in 2001. They went to the same university and residence in Scottland. But after seeing her "catwalk" in a charity fashion show event in 2002, it is only then Prince William realized that Kate is special.

But after two years, the couple broke up due to an undisclosed reason. As per Cheat Sheet, the prince wanted "space," and so they agreed to have a "trial separation."

Although the break-up caused a commotion among friends and the media, it did not last long. After six months of being separated, Kate Middleton and Prince William got back together.

While things are already expected from the prince to move forward, everyone thought that he would finally propose to Kate. However, it became a huge surprise when things went south for the couple. And in 2007, the prince, once again, "dumped" his college sweetheart as per reports.

The second break-up largely caught the attention of many. It became the face of many headlines during that year. But according to sources, the prince felt "free" after ending the relationship. On the other hand, Kate was "devastated," which led many to believe that she flew outside the country.

Even so, friends of the now-Duchess of Cambridge were said to be "thrilled" and relieved upon learning that the two got separated for good. This is because a lot of them were asserting that the prince was not treating Kate properly. And instead of seeing her as his girlfriend, many reports claimed that he used to treat her as his "servant."

According to Harper's Bazaar, Prince William "missed" his relationship with Kate Middleton just a few days after enjoying his "freedom." And in just a few months after, the two were spotted again together.

By this time, fans and friends of the couple already concluded that they would end up marrying each other. And they were right as the two tied the knot in 2011.

In an interview before the marriage, Kate Middleton revealed that the second break-up took a huge toll on her. And during that period, she felt really "unhappy." But even so, she now realized that the time they took off from the relationship became a huge blessing.

Recently, they just celebrated their eighth year of marriage.
