Is Doctor Who season 12 in trouble? Star Jodie Whittaker and showrunner Chris Chibnall are rumored to be leaving the series following reports over disagreements with bringing back a former character.
In a post on Twitter, El Gato quoted sources saying that Chibnall is leaving due to a dispute with BBC over how the showrunner brought back Rose in the first episode of Doctor Who season 12. Apparently, after watching the screener, the BBC bosses were not pleased with Rose's storyline and had ordered a reshoot of the episode, which Chibnall refused.
Another rumor discussed on BBC Radio revealed that Chibnall was fired from Doctor Who because not everyone was happy to work for him. The commentators suggested that the showrunner brought his team to replace those who have been working on the series for years.
The rumors also suggested that its lead star Whittaker decided to leave the show out of sympathy for Chibnall. The BBC will be making an announcement about these exits soon.
But an insider from the network spoke with Radio Times to deny that Whitaker and Chibnall are leaving Doctor Who season 12. The truth is the production is currently active and work on the set is expected to continue for the rest of the year.
Production for Doctor Who season 12 has been kept off social media and online though. Little is known about where the Thirteenth Doctor is thus these unconfirmed stories have been popping up online.
Meanwhile, former Doctor Who actor David Tennant, who was the Tenth Doctor, said that he's willing to work with Whittaker, as well as the rest of the Doctors, for the 60th-anniversary special. Though there are no concrete plans for this so far, fans have been eagerly speculating that there will be a whole production to feature the rest of the former lead stars like Christian Eccleston, Matt Smith, and Peter Capaldi.
"Jodie, Peter, and Matt are all mates now," Tennant said."It would be wonderful to be on set with them."
Tennant also said that he has worked with the showrunner before and has great admiration for Chibnall. His statements also debunk the rumors that the Chibnall and Whittaker have left the series.
BBC has not yet announced the return date for Doctor Who season 12, apart from confirming that the series will be in its early 2020 schedule. Teasers and other production announcements might likely be ready by the end of 2019.
