There is little doubt that people are still holding out for a fifth Shrek movie. After all, the beloved Dreamworks Animation franchise changed the way the world saw fairytales. So when can fans expect to see Shrek 5? There is a huge possibility that the planned revival will finally begin production after Trolls World Tour.

Fans have been wondering about what could happen in Shrek 5. There are speculations that it could follow Shrek and Fiona as they deal with their children reaching adolescence and having to teach them to be proper ogres. Others believe that King Arthur could return with a special favor from the couple or that the story could focus more on Donkey and Dragon. However, it looks like the fifth Shrek movie will be a reboot of the entire franchise.

Back in November 2018, it was revealed that Illumination founder Chris Melendandri has been tasked by Universal Pictures to reboot Shrek and Puss in Boots. Melandandri, who is known for producing the highly successful Despicable Me franchise and its spin-off Minions, is expected to find some fresh storylines for both Shrek and its own spin-off Puss In Boots. While the producer already has some ideas on how to move forward with the projects, he also pointed out that he wants the original cast to return and reprise their roles in the original films.

"When you look back on those vocal performances they're awesome, and while you certainly could make a case for a complete reinvention, I find myself responding to my own nostalgic feelings of wanting to go back to those characterizations," Meledandri said. "The challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like it's not simply yet another film in a series of sequels."

But how soon can Chris Melendandri begin work on Shrek 5? At this point, the producer has several different projects in various stages of development. For instance, Melendandri is also expected to work on a film based on the video game Mario Bros. Nevertheless, there is hope that the next Shrek movie will be announced right before the premiere of Dreamworks' upcoming sequel Trolls World Tour.

Trolls World Tour is currently scheduled for release on April 17, 2020. Although Dreamworks already has a few other sequels lined up after its premiere, there is a possibility that Universal will make another official announcement about Shrek 5 before the end of 2019.
