Bodyguard proved to be one of the most-watched series on BBC, pulling millions of viewers every week. After the BAFTA-winning thriller, which is also available to stream on Netflix, concluded in September 2018, many viewers are wondering if there will be Bodyguard season 2 or not.

Right now, BBC hasn't yet confirmed the renewal status of Bodyguard season 2, but series creator and writer Jed Mercurio and lead star Richard Madden are certain there will be another installment. In a report via RadioTimes, Mercurio revealed he's open in doing the second season, but Madden teased the series might not be coming back anytime soon.

During an event in Los Angeles organized by Netflix, the actor said they're already in talks about the second season, but he and Mercurio decided to at least give in a year so they could work on how to do something better. The two agreed there's something much more interesting about the series, and Madden added he'll catch up with Mercurio after 18 months, as he revealed his character needs a break.

So while the Bodyguard season 2 wasn't officially renewed, it's still very likely it would come back. But since the first season ended in 2018, then the second installment might not go into production before 2019 ends. Also, Mercurio said during the Banff World Media Festival in June 2019 that there's "no real update now" since BBC hasn't officially green-lit the next season.

Madden, who plays the lead role David Budd, is expected to return in Bodyguard season 2, alongside Gina McKee (as Anne Sampson), Sophie Rundle (Vicky Budd),Nina Toussaint-White (Louise Rayburn), Ash Tandon (Deepak Sharma), Paul Ready (Rob MacDonald), Vincent Franklin (Mike Travis), Richard Riddell (Tom Fenton), Michael Schaeffer (Richard Longcross), and David Westhead (John Vosler, the Prime Minister).

Other cast members that would likely come back are Stuart Bowman (Stephen Hunter-Dunn), Stephanie Hyam (Chanel Dyson), Matt Stokoe (Luke Aikens), Pippa Haywood (Chief Superintendent Lorraine Craddock), Nicholas Gleaves (Roger Penhaligon), Keeley Hawes (Julia Montague), Tom Brooke (Andy Apsted), Shubham Saraf (Tahir Mahmood), and Claire-Louise Cordwell (Kim Knowles).

As for the possible plot of Bodyguard season 2, David agreed to go to therapy for his PSTD at the end of the first season. And since Madden teased his character needs a break, the second season could be set up two years later. David couldn't go back to work immediately, especially he became the most famous man in London following the events happened in season 1 episode 6.
