The Tesla Semi is an upcoming all-electric truck from the car manufacturer. Widely hailed as one of the first truck to feature an all-electric functionality, the Tesla Semi was recently spotted by the California Highway Patrol. The patrol officers were lucky enough to chat with the truck's driver, and they found out one crucial piece of information: the Tesla Semi might break its own estimated range.

A handful of images showing the Tesla Semi doing some real-world testing was posted by the California Highway Patrol recently. Based on the photo, the Tesla Semi appears to be hauling several concrete blocks. The highway patrolmen were able to talk to the Semi driver and found out a couple of interesting facts.

According to the Tesla Semi driver, the truck he was driving was hauling a massive 75,000 pounds worth of cargo, including the trailer. This is already an impressive feat, considering the current battery technology. What is even more interesting is the fact that the driver admits the Semi has already exceeded its estimated range despite hauling an obviously heavy load.

The California Highway Patrol - Donner Pass division posted the photo on Facebook with a caption that reads, "Tesla is out testing the new electric truck tractor. The driver stated the concrete blocks are for testing purposes only. According to the driver the truck is operating at approximately 75,000 lbs and the truck is meeting or exceeding the range estimates."

Many analysts believe that the trucking industry will greatly benefit from the electric vehicle revolution. The cost of fossil fuel continues to rise almost on a weekly basis, and that there are growing concerns over its harmful effect on the environment. Electric technology, on the other hand, is deemed safer to the environment. Though the technology is widely regarded to be in its infancy, Tesla, along with notable car manufacturers, are making breakthroughs in research and development of various battery technologies to improve electric vehicles further.

It is important to note here that while electric vehicles are touted for their affordable operating cost, they are notorious for their limited range, as well as the time needed for charging. With newer battery technologies, car manufacturers can extend not only the range but also the power output of electric vehicles.

Tesla has lofty goals for its Semi electric truck. The company has set quite a high bar for it, expecting to sell 100,000 units before the end of 2023.
