After five years, there is now a possibility that The Boondocks Season 5 will be in the works. Fans' cry may be finally heard after John Witherspoon, who plays Granddad, teases the show is now in pre-production.
In an appearance on Joe Rogan podcast, Witherspoon dropped the much-awaited news about the adult animated sitcom. While talking about his character, he surprisingly said the show is coming back, per ComicBook.
"I didn't change my voice for The Boondocks," he revealed. "And they coming back: Boondocks is coming back... It's one of the best cartoons I've ever been on."
The Boondocks is based on Aaron McGruder's acclaimed comic strip of the same title. Adult Swim's adaptation then became a breakout hit after Season 1. It even managed to maintain the high acclaim after its last three seasons.
However, things changed after the difficulties in Season 3 and the lengthy delay of Season 4's release. Season 3 was out in 2010, while Season 4 was released in 2014.
As no details about The Boondocks Season 5 have been revealed yet, there is no way to know if McGruder will be involved with the new installment. There is also no news if other members of the original creative team, like Brian Ash and Carl Jones, will be working in the series.
If Witherspoon indeed returns for the new season, as he is the one who dropped the news about it, it may be safe to assume that other major voice cast will come back. Adult Swim also has yet to confirm if a new installment will be in the works, although there have been a lot of speculations about it since Season 3 ended.
Complex noted the animated series started in late 2005. At the time, McGruder was the executive producer of the first three seasons, until he didn't return to do Season 4.
In a statement, the writer revealed he would not be returning for Season 4. Despite his exit, he gave his heartfelt gratitude to Sony and Adult Swim for the "three great seasons" that he worked for.
"I created The Boondocks two decades ago in college, did the daily comic for six years, and was showrunner on the animated series for the first three seasons," he said. "The Boondocks pretty much represents my life's work to this point [...]"
McGruder then quoted a great white man who said, "Hollywood is a business," and added another quote that said, "Don't hold grudges." By the looks of it, fans still have wait for Adult Swim's official announcement about The Boondocks Season 5's release.
