The Enemy Within season 2 is not happening on NBC as the network canceled the series after just one season. Some viewers were shocked with the cancellation announcement as the first few episodes of psychological crime drama series performed well, but then, it didn't last long enough to stay on the network.

The first season of the series ended on May 20, 2019, and 10 days later, NBC announced there would be no The Enemy Within season 2. There's no clear reason as to why the series has been canceled, especially since most viewers expect it to run for at least three to four seasons.

The NBC series started in a strong position, and it placed on the eighth spot on the top scripted materials of the network. Previous reports revealed The Enemy Within had an average rating of 0.75 in the 18-49 demo and an average of 4.412 million weekly viewers.

As the program progressed, however, the viewership records declined. Hence, this is probably one of the major factors why The Enemy Within season 2 has been canceled, alongside other fellow midseason freshman shows, The Village and Abby's.

The series starred Dexter alum Jennifer Carpenter, who portrays Erica Shepherd. The psychological thriller follows this character and how brilliant she is as a CIA operative. But when master terrorist Tal (Lev Gorn) targeted her daughter Hannah (Sophia Gennusa), Erica was forced to reveal the four CIA agents' identities.

These agents were killed, and in turn, Erica becomes the "most notorious traitor" in history. Upon receiving her sentence of imprisonment, Tal attacks once again in the country and agents were forced to ask Erica's help due to her to the terrorist. Eventually, Tal revealed the US government was behind for all his actions since the beginning.

The season 1 finale isn't a great series ender, and it seems like there's a plan for The Enemy Within season 2 - considering how it all ended. NBC canceled the series for good, or at least on the network. If ever the series continues its course, viewers will probably see it on another network or platform.

Aside from Carpenter, The Enemy Within also stars Morris Chestnut (as Will Keaton), Raza Jaffrey (Daniel Zain), Kelli Garner (Kate Ryan), Cassandra Freeman (Jaquelyn Pettigrew) and Noah Mills (Jason Bragg). Recurring cast, on the other hand, includes Coral Peña (as Anna Cruz), James Carpinello (Anthony Cabrera), and Noah Bean (Christopher Shepherd).
