The Freeman family will return to the small screens with The Boondocks Season 5. Adult Swim renewed the adult animated sitcom for another season with a new concept that would surely adapt to today's society.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the new season will be a "complete re-imagining" for the "modern era." The show is now in development from the original series that Aaron McGruder created.
The show is based on McGruder's comic strip with the same title that started airing in November 2005 on Cartoon Network's late-night programming block Adult Swim. The comic, on the other hand, was launched in 1996.
The upcoming The Boondocks Season 5 will be a satire for the modern era. It will follow the adventures of the Freeman family as they go against the evil ruling of the tyrant Uncle Ruckus.
In an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience in March, John Witherspoon, who voices the role of Granddad, confirmed the show's return for another season. "The Boondocks is coming back. It's one of the best cartoons I've ever been on," he said.
Since Witherspoon announced the animated series' return, it gave birth to a lot of questions about the new installment. But instead of dropping hints about the show, executive producers Carl Jones and Brian Ash tried not to spill anything about it.
In an interview with Comicbook, the two had been very careful not to talk about The Boondocks Season 5. They only played coy about the series; joking Witherspoon would only do it by himself. "He's playing Hughey, Riley, Uncle Ruckus, Grandad, and a Pimp Named Slickback. That's a fact," they said.
As Witherspoon would do it all alone, it would now be called The Spoondocks. Jones then said they couldn't discuss anything about it, apologized, and only confirmed the internet wanted to see more of the animated series.
Although Jones and Ash didn't give any confirmation about the new season, it seemed to be a comment in and of itself as major creative figures often refused to talk about an upcoming project. The two might have sworn to secrecy their involvement in the new installment. However, the most important thing fans wanted to know is McGruder's participation in the series.
Will McGruder get involved in The Boondocks Season 5? The writer had no involvement in the previous season, and the fandom didn't like it. So, it remains to be seen if he will ever get down to it.
