There will be big changes happening in Madam Secretary Season 6 as it will feature a major time jump. Things will be different as fans will now see Elizabeth McCord (Téa Leoni) as the new President of the United States, taking the seat at the Oval office.
According to CarterMatt, there was an announcement earlier this summer that the premiere episode of the show's sixth installment would pick up after Elizabeth won the Presidency. This move wasn't decided until after the previous season aired.
Everyone believed the new season would chronicle Elizabeth's Presidential campaign. However, things changed when the producers learned this would be the show's last and final season, but fans would still see some glimpses of the campaign through flashbacks.
In an interview with TV Line, executive producer Barbara Hall revealed they "found a way to have the best of both worlds." Thus, they already jumped ahead and made Elizabeth a president. But aside from the storyline changes, there would also be some cast changes happening.
In Madam Secretary Season 6, Sebastian Arcelus (Jay), Geoffrey Arend (Matt), Kathrine Herzer (Alison), Evan Roe (Jason) and Keith Carradine (President Dalton) are no longer series regulars. Sara Ramirez has also left the show. Although fans will still see these stars in the final season, they will not be in each episode.
One of the new things that will be seen in the new season is it will look different than its predecessors. There will be new sets, new challenges, and a newly-reduced cast. In fact, in Hall's own words, it was like "launching a new series."
The concept of Elizabeth moving into the Oval Office only began as an inside joke in the series. The show's production usually has to wait for a little while before it finds out that it will return for another installment, so planning about her presidency seems to be premature at the time.
However, as it gets renewed every season, the joke is starting to get real. It even gets official when Elizabeth announced her candidacy. When the previous season finale aired, Hall and fellow executive producer Lori McCreary thought Madam Secretary Season 6 would feature Elizabeth's journey to the presidency through a campaign trail and then the election.
However, CBS announced Season 6 would be its last and final installment. Given that the new season would end during the real 2020 president election, the American audience might not want to see a "mudslinging contest" at the same time the real one would be happening. So, Madam Secretary Season 6 will show Elizabeth as the new President when it is set to be out on Sunday, Oct. 6, CBS.
