A lot of people remember Princess Diana on the 22nd anniversary of her death on Aug. 31. As there are honors and tributes here and there, the claim that Prince Charles had something to do with her accident once again emerged.

The Independent revealed, in 2017, a note that Princess Diana allegedly wrote to her former butler Paul Burrell, claiming Prince Charles planned her accident. The former Princess of Wales alleged the father of her kids was planning an accident inside her car that would cause her a "serious head injury." The accident, reportedly, would allow Prince Charles "to marry" another woman again.

Burrell unearthed the alleged note in his book, A Royal Duty, in 2003. The author asserted Princess Diana gave it to him as an "insurance policy." She even put a date on it and asked him to keep it "just in case."

The note was written, in 1996, two months after her divorce from Prince Charles. Here, she claimed that she had a hunch there was a plan for an accident in her car, brake failure, and severe head injury. The next thing we know, Princess Diana was with Dodi Al Fayed in the back of a chauffeur-driven Mercedes that crashed in Paris's Pont de l'Alma underpass.

Al Fayed and the chauffeur named Henri Paul, quickly died at the scene. Princess Diana and Al Fayed's bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, were still taken to the Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital, suffering from a serious injury. However, the princess also suffered from a heart attack and eventually died, while Rees-Jones survived the crash.

In a French inquiry in 1997, it was revealed the chauffeur was intoxicated of a cocktail of alcohol and drugs. He was, reportedly, driving too fast that caused the collision.

Although Prince Charles' name was redacted from Burrell's book, the accusation was revealed in the 2007 inquest at London's High Court. Princess Diana claimed that she and Camilla Parker-Bowles were only used as a decoy by the future king. She also asserted he wanted to marry Princes William and Harry's former nanny Tiggy Legge-Bourke, at the time.

"This particular phase in my life is the most dangerous - my husband is planning 'an accident' in my car, brake failure, and serious head injury in order to make the path clear for him to marry Tiggy," she wrote. However, one of her closest friends, Lucia Flecha da Lima, questioned the letter's validity, claiming Burrell could have forged it.

She even testified on the court, saying she didn't believe Princess Diana had feared for her life. The inquest ruled Paul's driving and the ensuing paparazzi caused the crash that led to the princess and Al Fayed's death. The news brought a big shock to the Royal family and Prince Charles experienced a serious publicity backlash, Express noted.
