Dating Prince William has never been a bed of roses for Kate Middleton. It was revealed that the now Duchess of Cambridge had been treated abominably by some of Williams' friends when they were still dating.
The English royal prince and Middleton first met in 2001 when both of them are studying at the University of St. Andrews. They become close friends at first before it blossomed into a romantic relationship. The two first kept their relationship under wraps. However, by 2006, rumors about the romance started to circulate and so as the backlash on Kate.
In the book William And Catherine by royal biographer Andrew Morton, he revealed that Kate knows even from the start that William's friends have reservations about her. They felt that Kate is not the right woman for him because of her commoner status. Morton wrote that a Scottish nobleman told him that William was expected to marry a woman from the aristocracy or European royalty.
"Kate was treated abominably behind her back by some who should have shown better manners," the nobleman told Morton.
The author added that Middleton has no social advantages at all. In comparison to Princess Diana, William's mother had a title as Lady Diana Spencer before marrying Prince Charles.
Morton added that Middleton's parents also experienced similar treatment when their daughter started to date William. He revealed that there were those in the royal and aristocratic circles who believed that the Middletons were "too middle-of-the-road for the House of Windsor."
Despite the skepticism on Kate among William's pals, the couple tied the knot in a spectacular royal wedding ceremony in 2011. The Duchess of Cambridge has proven that she can be an asset to the royal family, a great wife to William, and mother to their three children- Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
Meanwhile, it was also revealed in the book that Prince William also struggled with trust issues during his university days. William has doubts whether his fellow students are genuinely wanted to be his friend, or if they were taking advantage of him because of his royal status.
Morton revealed that there were times that William would spread rumors about himself to see who among his friends would share the makeup stories with the press. When the Prince figured out who shared information to the press, the person was ostracised by William and his royal inner circle. William's friend, Michael Choong, confessed to Morton that William detested and won't forgive people who betray him.
