Is Alita: Battle Angel 2 still happening? It might not have been a billion-dollar success, but there is little doubt that Alita: Battle Angel was well received by fans and critics alike. People were understandably wary of the cyberpunk movie when it was first announced, but the Robert Rodriguez flick certainly proved itself at the box office.
So, why is it taking so long to announce the sequel? Star Rosa Salazar has spoken up about the delay of Alita: Battle Angel 2, and she believes it has a lot to do with Disney's plans for its projects.
It's no secret that James Cameron has big plans for Alita: Battle Angel 2. The filmmaker, who produced the first movie, had previously teased that there could be multiple sequels in the future. Unfortunately, things may have changed since Disney acquired 20th Century Fox.
Rosa Salazar knows about the acquisition and how it could affect the future of the possible cyberpunk franchise. The Maze Runner: The Death Cure actress told Slashfilm that she isn't surprised that Alita: Battle Angel 2 has not yet been greenlighted since Disney and Fox just went through "a crazy merger." Salazar stated that the acquisition led to people "gaining jobs" and "losing jobs" at the same time. So, it might not yet be the right time for a sequel.
"The whole Disney/Fox acquisition is so involved, this isn't the right time for me to call Alan Horn and be like, 'Hey bro, I know you got a lotta stuff going on, but like what about Alita 2?" Salazar said. In addition to that, she's ready to keep playing the cyborg for as long as possible.
"I would play Alita 'til my last breath," Salazar said. "I would, and thanks to the performance capture technology, I probably could."
The idea of Rosa Salazar being open to doing an Alita sequel is a welcome one, but what could happen in the second film? Alita: Battle Angel 2 could finally expand on the character of Nova, who is played by Edward Norton, and how he will face Alita. Either way, there are several possibilities on what the new movie will cover once a sequel is confirmed.
Alita: Battle Angel 2 has not yet been announced. However, fans can expect Rosa Salazar to be ready to return as the cyborg in the near future.
