NBC officially renewed Blindspot season 5. However, it was also confirmed this would be the final installment of the series. The renewal announcement was made back in May, just a few weeks before the fourth season concluded. But, since then, the network has kept the details of the show's final run under wraps.
Considering the release dates of the previous seasons, most fans assumed Blindspot season 5 would premiere in September or October 2019. However, many were shocked when NBC revealed its fall schedule and the series was included not on the list.
Right now, it remains unclear when will the final installment arrive on NBC. Some reports, however, speculated the fifth season would likely premiere in spring of 2020. And if not, then, it will probably be released in the early summer of 2020. As per TVLine, the new season will have less than 13 episodes as well.
When Blindspot season 5 premieres, all core cast members will surely be back, such as Jaimie Alexander as Jane Doe and Sullivan Stapleton as Kurt Weller. The upcoming installment also adds Julee Cerda as a recurring character. She will be playing the role of Ivy Sand; though further details about the character are yet to be revealed.
As for the plot of Blindspot season 5, show creator Martin Gero told Entertainment Weekly the final installment would open with a two-month time jump. Thus, the new season will explain what happened with the lives of Weller, Audrey Zapata (played by Audrey Esparza), Edgar Reade (Rob Brown), and Patterson (Ashley Johnson) in season 4 finale, while Jane watched the bomb went off from a distance.
"Presuming they all survive, or the ones who do, I think there will be great unity within [the team] like there never has been before," Gero also teased.
The showrunner added the final installment would show different sides of the characters as an outcome of the apparent accident. So, everything will change the whole dynamic and setting of the series. Based on his previous interviews, Gero also maintained Blindspot had been originally planned to have five seasons, and he said he already knew how the series would conclude.
Blindspot debuted in 2016, and the series initially followed a woman who found herself waking up naked in the middle of New York Times Square and covered with tattoos. The FBI eventually discovered that these tattoos were connected to the cases they're working on. But as the series progresses, the show followed other conspiracies.
