Amazon has yet to announce the renewal status of Absentia season 3, but despite lack of confirmation, there have been several reports about the upcoming installment. For instance, the Stana Katic-led psychological drama was reportedly in the middle of production in Bulgaria.

Deadline reported back in July that Absentia season 3 was near renewal. Katic, who plays lead role Emily Byrne, also posted a photo on her Instagram earlier that month and she wrote on her caption: "Just gonna leave this here... #WritersRoom". But then, why does Amazon hasn't officially announced the renewal of the series?

According to Amazon Adviser, the lack of renewal confirmation of the third season isn't really surprising. It's worth noting the streaming platform didn't also confirm the renewal of the second season until it was ready to be released back in June. It also feels like the renewal announcement was just a formality since several reports have been basically confirming the likelihood of the third season.

As for the possible release date of Absentia season 3, some speculated the series will return in mid-2020. The first season debuted in September 2017, while the second installment premiered on June 2019. The show doesn't follow a particular release date schedule, so it's hard to predict when the new installment will officially drop.

Meanwhile, the third season will also introduce a new face when it arrives. Ross O'Hennessy will be joining Katic and the rest of the cast, and he'll be playing the role of Macleod. The actor's management revealed this news via Twitter, confirming he will be the new addition in the series. However, it remains unknown whether he's a friend or a foe.

As for the familiar faces that will likely return, Bruno Bichir (as Daniel Vega), Patrick Heusinger (Special Agent Nick Durand), Paul Freeman (Warren Byrne), Cara Theobold (Alice Durand), Angel Bonanni (Tommy Gibbs), and Neil Jackson (Jack Byrne) are all expected to come back next season.

The plot of Absentia season 3 could delve deeper into Emily's past after the revelation she's been part of an experiment about post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Also, the new season would probably focus on other supporting characters and their effect or impact on Emily.

Moreover, FBI Special Agent Cal Isaac (plays by Matthew Le Nevez) will reportedly be more apparent in Absentia season 3. His relationship with Emily is expected to be further explored when the new installment arrives. He'll be more reliant with Emily, and it would eventually dig deeper with his personal life.
