This Is Us season 4 will, finally, be introducing the father of Rebecca (played by Mandy Moore). NBC confirmed that Tim Matheson had been included as cast in the role as Dave Malone, whom Moore said dotes on her character.
The exact details of how long Matheson will appear in This Is Us season 4 are unclear as there is a tight noose surrounding this series. Per Deadline, however, Dave is supposed to have a bigger role in the relationship of his daughter to Jack (played by Milo Ventimiglia).
"Rebecca is a bit of a daddy's girl," Moore said an interview. "There are certain things that they don't align on. But I think at the end of the day she really loves her father for who he is. He's quite protective of her," she added.
TV Line revealed that Jack and Rebecca would have an uncomfortable dinner with the parents on This Is Us season 4. NBC released some photos of this occasion, which also means that Elizabeth Perkins will reprise her role as Rebecca's mom, Janet. Viewers saw Janet in, at least, four episodes in This Is Us season 2 and 3.
Meanwhile, Chris Sullivan (as Toby) revealed to Entertainment Weekly that This Is Us season 4 episode 1 will have a surprising start. He said that the show is going towards a direction no fan might have expected and he was surprised himself when he read the script.
His co-star, Sterling K. Brown (as Randall), has intimated to the press earlier that This Is Us season 4 episode 1 will be "disruptive" and "subversive." For one thing, the new season will feature a bigger cast, and there will be a few new faces joining the show, such as Jennifer Morrison in a secret role. The characters are also going to see themselves in predicaments that have never been shown in This Is Us before.
For Toby, it will be about the challenges of raising baby Jack with Kate (played by Chrissy Metz). For Randall, This Is Us season 4 will highlight his new job and a new lifestyle in Philadelphia.
Creator Dan Fogelman said, in several interviews, that This Is Us season 4 will work as a reboot for the Pearson family. The new installment will premiere on NBC on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2019, at 9:00 p.m.
